Creating moving pictures

In Year 1 and 2 pupils have been inolved in a combined art and design technology project to create moving pictures. They began by exploring tinting and shading with paint and created the Antarctic backgound. They then explored how different lever and slider mechanisms work and used using them to add a moving penguin to the foreground. We are really impressed by the attention to detail. Great job, KS1!

Bringing stories to life with puppets in KS1

Pupils in Years 1 and 2 were given a design brief to design and make a wooden spoon puppet which they could use to retell one of the traditional stories they have been reading in English.

Pupils began by drawing a number of characters, then, after exploring the materials and resources available to them, they each created a final deisgn complete with a list of the resources they would need. The pupils then worked indepepndently to create their puppet. After pupils had made the puppet came the opportunity to try them out by retelling stoties to each other! This provided a superb oportunity for pupils to evauate their puppet and suggest how they might improve their design if they were to make another.

Here's what the Y1 pupils in Biirch Class had to say:

  • "I loved making my puppet! It's got long hair, just like Rapunzel!"
  • "I drew mine with loads and loads of colours but then I wanted it to be grey in the end, so that's why it is."
  • "The pompoms didn't want to stick on so I drew my nose on."
  • "The tissue paper came off. I would use felt next time."
  • "It's great, isn't it!"

A project to highlight awareness of critically endangered species

This recent Year 5 and 6 art project linked closely to research carried out during English lessons about critically endangered species around the world. Pupils were further inspired by the work of the American artist, Olga Shvartsur. After time spent developing drawing techniques and experimenting with ink, watercolour and pastels, the pupils had the oppotunity to review and revisit their ideas beofre creating these orignial final pieces. Mrs Kent was so impressed, she has one of the pieces displayed in her office!

When asked about the learning in art and their artwork, pupils said:

"We looked at a few artists to see different styles. This was most people's favourite because Olga's art is realistic and colourful."

"I chose an elephant because they are endangered. We need to help save them."

"I love art! We learn new techniques and then we can be creative and try things out."

Thank you to the pupils and staff in Year 5 and 6 for sharing their work.
